Home / QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS: Water-Based PUD Adhesive with Enhanced Capability for Wet and Heat-Activated Bonding

“PE’s low surface energy makes direct bonding with waterborne PUDs marginal without pretreatment, even if the PUD is marketed as a “universal” lamination grade.”

- Perplexity AI

QUICKBOND™ CC4158 manufactured by Coral Industries have been one of the benchmark water-based polyurethane heat-activated contact adhesive for some of the stringent requirements for more than 20 years. With a new team of scientists and engineers after Coral Industries acquisition by AIT Chemical, QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS has been modified and enhanced from the original QUICKBOND™ CC4158 with expanded capability and compatibility to provide strong bonding to EPE, EPP and respective film and panel substrates of PE and PP. Strong direct adhesion with both wet bonding and heat-activated bonding process without the use of “corona, plasma, or a chemical primer that raises surface energy into at least the mid‑30s dynes/cm range is typically needed before applying the PUD to get durable peel and shear,” according to Perplexity AI.

Build on the success of QUICKBOND™ CC4158 heat-activated PUD high performance applications for the last 20 years, Coral Industries of AIT Chemical Inc. scientists and engineers adding some polymer molecular modification, are proud to introduced QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS with the following two distinct capabilities:

  •          Compatibility to include high bond strength to EPE/EPP foam to themselves and other substrates without primer or surface treatments.
  •          Can be used for wet bonding of foams of all polymer types with high bond strength. When the bonded layers and structures are exposed to heat-activated temperature, the bond strength further strengthen to even stronger structures.

Water-based heat-activated or activatable PUD finds many automated assembly applications required strong adhesion even at some elevated temperature when a more worker friendly process is required. QUICKBOND™ CC4158 from AIT Coral Industries have been successfully used in many advanced special products made with fabrics, leathers and foams in industrial, automotive interiors, upholstery and specialty applications. The innovative enhancements engineered into QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS expand the basic applications to combining water and moisture barrier layers made of EPE, EPP and PE, PP liners with either wet or heat-activated bonding processes.

Dry Heat-Activated Bonding for High Shear Strength and High Productivity:

Wherever applicable, QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS like QUICKBOND™ CC4158 can be dispensed onto one side of the substrate and allow to ambient or heat drying to form dry film and ready for heat-activated bonding with contact pressure like any heat-activated polyurethane water-based adhesive. The heat-activated temperature is from 70-100ºC. Higher temperature required less pressure to induce adequate melt-flowing to form strong bonding with more area melt-flow coverage.

Heat-activation bonding of QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS for lamination of structural parts to include forms of moisture and water barrier made of EPE and EPP foams, and/or PE and PP sheets. This is previously not possible with traditional heat-activated water-based adhesives.

To expand the range of applications based on different processing and application temperature requirements, AIT Coral Industries also created companion products to QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS. QUICKBOND™ CC4058-PLUS and QUICKBOND™ CC4258-PLUS has lower temperature and higher temperature activation than QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS respectively.

Wet Bonding as Water-Based Contact Adhesive Maintaining High Bond Strength Up to 85®C and Beyond:

QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS like its famous sister product QUICKBOND™ CC4158 can be used as contact adhesives. When used to attach one-side porous substrate to another porous or non-porous substrate, they can be dispensed on one side and IMMEIDATELY assembled to quickly achieve handling strength within minutes. When used for bond less porous substrate, once the water-based adhesive on the substrate becomes transparent and tacky, they can be assembled with immediate handling strength.

Once fully “cured” when the water is fully removed from the adhesive, high shear bond strength of over 1,000 psi is achieved while maintaining over 500 psi at 65ºC and over 200-300 psi at 85ºC. Besides its typical usage of bonding fabrics, PU and EVA foams, natural and synthetic leathers onto different substrates, QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS enables the bonding of all these substrates and foams to PE, PP, EPE, and EPP. This novel compatibility enables the formation of structures and items that typically required solvent-based adhesive such as CC1025 series available from Coral Industries.
