Home / QUICKBOND™ CC4158: Proven High Bond Strength Water-Based Heat-Activated Polyurethane Adhesive

Water-based, heat-activated polyurethane dispersion (PUD) adhesives combine environmental, performance, and processing benefits, making them increasingly popular in manufacturing (especially textiles, laminates, footwear, and composites).

Heat-activated bonding with polyurethane water dispersion (PUD) are characterized by the heat-activation or heat melt-flow temperature. The heat activated temperature is designed into the polymer molecularly structure designed into the PUD.

QUICKBOND™ CC4158 is one of the most successful PUD based adhesive for the more advanced applications made by Coral Industries of AIT Chemical, Inc. for over 20 years. The heat-activation bonding is above 70ºC with higher temperature up to 100ºC. The high bond strength is maintained up to 85ºC based on its molecular structure.

QUICKBOND™ CC4158 have been widely used in more advanced applications where adhesive strength and durability are important for their successes:

  • Footwear and apparel laminating
  • Automotive interior panels
  • Upholstery
  • Technical textiles
  • Composite structures

Heat-activated water based Polyurethane dispersion (PUD) have demonstrated the ability to provide strong adhesion with resiliency as adhesives across a wide range of industries including: automotive fabrics and coverings, shoe and apparel fabrics and laminations, packaging laminations, and high-performance laminations. QUICKBOND™ CC4158 had successful incorporation of bonding to withstand temperature cycling and fluctuations and moisture and mechanical resistance. QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS further enhanced it capability to have compatibility to include bonding of EPE, EPP, PE and PP substrates.

The following are some of the advantages of QUICKBOND™ CC4158 (similarly for QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS, QUICKBOND™ CC4058-PLUS and QUICKBOND™ CC4258-PLUS series of adhesives):

1.      Strong Adhesion & Durability

a.      Excellent Bond Strength: Heat activation strengthens the polyurethane polymer structure, yielding durable bonds to a wide range of substrates (natural/synthetic fibers, foams, plastics, metals). QUICKBOND™ CC4158 achieves shear bond strength of well over 1000 psi.

b.      Resilience: Good resistance to stress, flexing without cracking or delamination.

2.      Versatile Performance

a.      Wide Substrate Compatibility: Bonds textiles, leather, paper, wood, nonwovens, films, and composites. QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS, QUICKBOND™ CC4058-PLUS and QUICKBOND™ CC4258-PLUS further extended capability for bonding notoriously difficult to bond non-polar foams and substrates such as EPE/PE and EPP/PP.

b.      Customizable Properties: Formulations can be tailored for different temperature of activation, QUICKBOND™ CC4058-PLUS (>60ºC), QUICKBOND™ CC4158-PLUS (>70ºC) and QUICKBOND™ CC4258-PLUS (>80ºC) depending on processing limitation and end-use.

3.      Controlled Activation & Processing When Using Heat-Activation Bonding Operation

a.      Heat-Triggered: Activation only occurs with elevated temperature, giving better control during lamination and assembly — minimal premature set.

b.      Fast Production Speeds: Suitable for high-speed heat-press, calendering, roll-to-roll, or continuous processes.

4.      Aesthetic & Functional Benefits

a.      Clear/Colorless Films: Water-based PUDs often dry to clear films — beneficial where appearance matters.

b.      Minimal Hand (Softness): In textiles and apparel, they can preserve fabric softness and flexibility.

5.      Reduced Waste & Cleanup

a.      Easy Cleanup: Tools and equipment can generally be cleaned with water (before curing), reducing the need for harsh cleaners.

b.      Lower Material Waste: Precise application and controlled activation can minimize rejects.

6.      End-Product Performance

a.      Thermal & Chemical Resistance: Once cured, QUICKBOND™ CC4158 and related PUD adhesives withstand heat, humidity, and chemical exposure better than most water-based adhesive systems.

b.      Aging & Weathering: Good long-term bond stability in many environments.

7.      Lower Environmental Impact

a.      No VOCs: It is water-based polymer water dispersion. It does not emit volatile organic compounds compared with solvent-based systems.

b.      Safer Work Environment: Air pollution and irritating odors are almost non-existence to provide healthier, more comfortable and safe working environment.

c.       Regulatory Friendly: Fully in compliance with environmental and emissions standards (e.g., EPA, OSHA, REACH).

8.      Improved Safety

a.      Non-flammable: Unlike solvent-borne contact adhesives, water-based PUD is not flammable, lowering fire risk during storage and processing.

b.      Healthier Handling: Reduced exposure to solvents and safer for operators.
